Growing asparagus in the city
Growing your own asparagus is so easy and effortless I highly recommend you give it a go.
My asparagus plot is small (just under 1sq metre) but it still provides us with a taste of home-grown, utterly delicious, fresh asparagus in spring.
There is nothing quite like picking it fresh for a weekend brunch, and once the picking window is over, it becomes a beautiful green fern, which further rewards you in autumn with a fantastic display of colour. Considering all this, and the fact that you really need to do next to nothing apart from wait for spring, it is an all-round winner.
I got my root clumps from someone on freecycle who was getting rid of theirs, and it might be worth checking whether someone near you has some to share. Apparently, it had started up popping up through his lawn. I am very sad that mine has shown very little propensity to be invasive.
